I just finished watching Serena Williams win her 5th Wimbledon championship and follow that up with a doubles championship win with her sister, Venus.
I LOVED it! What amazing athletes and women!
One of the powerful statements she made during her interview was that after suffering foot surgeries, blood clots and stays in the hospital, her only focus was on staying alive and coming out of her depression.
What her win and that story reminded me of was that the road to victory is never easy.
Setbacks, disappointments, depression, unexpected obstacles and seemingly insurmountable challenges are a part of EVERYONE’S journey. I know it seems like some people are exempt – but no one is. You never become a champion without having to push through at least one barrier – whether it’s mental (mindset) or physical. She’s an amazing demonstration of that!
Now, we may not win $1,989,556 for our championship moment (as Serena just did for her singles and doubles win) but we all have had a “championship moment”. That “win” where we have beat the odds, we’ve worked hard, dealt with frustration and overcame challenges that came our way as we pursued that defining goal.
One of my “championship moments” happened almost 3 years ago when I trained and completed a half marathon. No TV cameras, no Sportscenter, no huge plate or big prize money. Just sheer exhilaration and pride as I completed something that, at one point, seemed unattainable. That was a championship moment for me!
What about you?
What’s your championship moment? Please share below so we can celebrate with you!
