Never Underestimate

This week, I attended the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Annual Luncheon for the D.C. Chapter. It was great to touch base with some friends and a few clients.

The keynote speaker was Cathy Merrill Williams, President and Publisher of Washingtonian Magazine. For those of you outside of the Washington, DC area, this publication is tops when it comes to editorials, events, professionals and politics.

Her theme for her talk was “never underestimate the power and abilities of a woman”.

Her family owned the magazine, so some questioned her skills and qualifications to run the magazine – especially taking over around 2006 – during the great recession and declines in print media.

But she showed them that not only was she capable, smart and fully competent for the job – she was also able to keep them profitable.

I think we all have them at some point – doubters, unbelievers, skeptics and cynics. Those who sit back with their arms folded across their chest glaring – waiting for you to fail. And when they appear, rearing their ugly head – just follow the advice of Cathy: Don’t pay them any mind – stay focused on what you do best and let them see – when it’s all said and done – that they never should have underestimated you.

  1. Wonderful advice about ignoring the naysayers. When you aren’t successful yet, most people will tell you “it won’t work” or “it’s been done before and it has failed”. In essence, people underestimate people. But once you succeed, the same naysayers want to say that they knew you had it in you – maybe it’s those naysayers that in part spur us on to succeed because we refuse to give in to them.
