Last week, my sister and her husband took their two boys – Jakob, who’s going into the 8th grade, and Shemuel, who is starting high school – to Chicago to visit Northwestern University.
Shemuel loves inventing, drawing and designing and is constantly sharing his robot concepts or talking about how to create rockets. He is fascinated with engineering and came across information about Northwestern (we have no idea how), becoming super excited about one day attending.
They attended a tour and orientation sponsored by the school, spoke to an admissions counselor and talked with one of the professors at the McCormick School of Engineering. As a result, he has a clear understanding of what it will take to get admitted, what he will learn while attending and what types of careers he could go into.
He is pumped up – ready to get good grades in high school (as he clearly understands the connection between his grades and his goal), thrilled about how he can create a career he loves with the right education (he sees that his professional goals won’t “just happen”) and he is REALLY excited about living on campus (he loves the idea of not being told when to go to bed).
That’s the power of exposure. To see what your outcome could be before you start the journey infuses you with commitment, energy and a desire to stick to it.
