When the Reward is Greater Than Your Fear

I entered a drawing for tickets to see Oprah live, along with Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins in New York on April 2nd. And guess what? I got them!

You can only imagine how over the top excited my mom was when I told her I was taking her. But her excitement was short lived.

In order for us to attend, our tickets had to be picked up on April 1st…by 5:00pm…in New York. Well, we all know where I will be on April 1st! (Hanging with Suze Orman, Jillian Michaels, Ali Brown, Lisa Nichols and hundreds of amazing women from around the world!)

The idea of my mom going to New York on her own and getting those tickets put a look of sheer panic on her face. The crowds, the fast pace, having no idea where she would need to go and having to figure it out. My dad could go, but he’s just as apprehensive as my mother.

Then, my mom realized she had a choice. She could face her fears of traveling to New York and figure it out or she could miss out on this incredible opportunity and experience.

Guess what won out? That’s right, she’ll be on the train April 1st to pick up our tickets and I’ll be joining her on the 2nd. The reward became greater than her fear.

That’s my hope for you. That the rewards of what’s possible for you will far exceed the fear you have in going after it.

I love this quote. Why?

Because it demonstrates one of the fundamental problems that hold people back from getting what they want. They are looking for something, or someone, to come in and “save” them. To do the work for them. To make it easier.

Here’s the deal.

You can hire someone to show you the technique of doing pushups.
You can hire someone to show up everyday to cheer and motivate you to do the pushups.
You can hire someone to do the pushups with you.
You can talk to someone – every month, every week, every day – about your desire to do pushups.
You can attend workshops on the benefits of pushups.
You can buy the “Perfect Pushup” and keep it with you at all times.
You can say daily “I do pushups everyday to build strength and stay fit.”

The Missing Link

Last Thursday, I was the special guest on a Twitter chat and one of the questions the host asked was “what was the best advice you’ve ever gotten“? It didn’t take long for me to answer.

Several years ago, someone told me to always remember: you don’t know what you don’t know.

When you are ready for more…to accomplish a new goal…to move to the next level…there’s a strong chance that you’ll be at a disadvantage because you don’t know what you don’t know. This highlights that it’s not about finding answers to your questions – because you don’t know what all the questions are. It’s not about learning new skills – because you haven’t realized that there is a skill that needs to be obtained. It’s a missing link that you don’t know is missing.

What knowledge – what strategy – what tools – what advantage do you need to give you the edge? What vital piece of information are you missing? What link is broken that, when repaired, has the potential to change the trajectory of your life?

The Shortcut, The Hook-Up and Easy Way Out

Please stop looking for someone else to make your life easier.

Please stop expecting others to go out of their way for when you don’t want to go out of your way for yourself.

Please stop asking others to invest in you when you haven’t put any of your own skin in the game.

Please stop whining, complaining and snapping at others for not wanting to help you. Figure out a way to get it done yourself.

Please stop trying to guilt others into doing what you want because you don’t want to do the hard work.

Please stop blaming others for your lack of success, drive, progress, focus and resources.

Please stop looking for the shortcut. Sometimes there is none.

Please stop asking for the hookup. Stand up and be responsible for getting it done.

Please stop looking for the easy way out. Sometimes, you have to sweat, fight and never give up to get what you want.

Please stop.

There are times when you get the shortcut, the hook-up and the easy way out – but please stop relying on it. Many times, they come while you are in progress of making it happen. Sometimes they never come. Stop waiting. Get moving.

That quote has such power in it because it speaks to the core reason most people don’t experience the power of an exhilarated victory – that overwhelming sense of accomplishment caused by being propelled beyond your wildest dreams. Beyond what you ever thought was possible.

I’m not talking about happiness, excitement, pleasure or enjoyment that comes with reaching a goal. I’m talking exhilaration – defined as to enliven; invigorate; stimulate. This is achieved when you do something that completely blows your mind. And when you experience this, it’s so hard to go back to “the way things were” because you’ve tasted what doing the impossible can feel like.
